January 2019 Update

We recently had our first Maipelo Clinic of 2019, and it was quite busy! In total, 44 children and parents stopped by to receive care. The highlight of the day was learning that two babies tested negative for HIV. With the support of people like you, we were able to provide these babies with medication to dramatically decrease their risk of contracting HIV from their mothers.

Four-year-old Itai and his mother Mandy were among those who attended the clinic for the first time. Last week, Itai’s father had become seriously ill. He tested positive for HIV, which led to Mandy and Itai being tested as well. They too discovered that they tested positive for HIV. Thankfully, Mandy and Itai are still relatively healthy, and were able to get started on treatment after visiting the clinic.

We also saw at least 10 pregnant women at the Maipelo clinic. Our volunteer physician Rebecca brought in a portable ultrasound machine, which made caring for all these women much easier. Through access to the Maipelo clinic, these women will receive treatment to minimize the risk that their babies will be born with HIV.

Thank you again for taking the time to learn more about Cover the Globe’s work with Maipelo, and stay posted for more updates! If you would like to subscribe to our mailing list so you can learn more about people like Mandy and Itai, fill out the form below!
