October 2018 Update
In October’s Maipelo Clinic we saw over 30 children and parents affected by HIV. Many of them were pregnant or had just recently delivered, so we put a lot of effort toward ensuring that these babies could be born HIV-negative!
One of our longtime patients, Tawana, came in with her newborn son John. Unfortunately, the hospital where Tawana had John did not give baby John medication to prevent him from contracting HIV. Since Tawana has been receiving HIV medication through Cover the Globe’s support, however, the risk of John contracting HIV is low. We will keep our fingers crossed that John’s first HIV test in a month comes back negative. Tawana also brought her six-year old son George, who is HIV-positive, with her. George also receives free HIV medication through our partnership with Maipelo, so he was looking quite strong and happy when we saw him.
In addition to Tawana, a woman named Nyasha and her partner Nathan stopped by for HIV testing. Nathan tested positive for HIV, and we were able to start giving him the life-saving medication he needs. We also saw 27-year-old Frances, who is very pregnant and close to delivery. Frances’ partner abandoned her, so she is now living with her sister. We advised that she go to the hospital so that she can be induced.
